Joel Jupp

Worship & Tech Portfolio

Video & Audio

Arranged, performed, and produced by Joel Jupp. Recorded and mixed in Ableton Live. Edited with Final Cut Pro.

(Note: Throughout the portfolio, video examples are included because video technology has become increasingly important for worship services — not only for live streaming but incorporating into services.)

Audio Recordings

Additional samples of original recordings on Spotify, Apple Music, etc. Headphones recommended for stereo effects.

(Note: Some of these tunes use more experimental/modern sounds in the indie genre, and technology has improved since I recorded some of these tunes, but these are provided for demonstration of some of my other projects. I have included samples of original songs, since songwriting is often part of a worship leader’s calling.)

Worship Leading

A collection of worship leading examples — including online and in-person.

Teaching & Worship Planning

Samples of short sermons along with planned service content.

(Note: Other music, which I selected for these services, is used in these videos. I taught and produced the videos.)

Design

Examples of media designed for in-person and online worship:

  • motion background for worship service intro
  • online service introduction
  • online service introduction
  • church slideshow introduction
(Note: Other music is used for these videos.)

Worship Media & Tech Proficiencies

Audio
  • Ableton Live — Currently, I use Ableton Live as my primary recording program. A major benefit of Live is its “scenes” function, which is why many worship leaders and live musicians like using Live. I primarily use Live for studio recording, but I also use Push 3 (its hardware device), and I have used the Looptimus MIDI controller for triggering scenes (especially pads) in live worship settings.
  • Propellerhead Reason — I started recording with Reason in 2003, and I used Reason for a recording project for my master’s degree. I still have a deep affinity for Reason, but I primarily use Reason as a VST plugin, mainly for software synths and drum machines. Reason is an excellent program for linear songwriting and one that I would also recommend to students, especially since it also introduces students to virtual hardware.
  • Logic — I also use Logic to record or edit audio. While I prefer the layout and live abilities of Live, I can also use Logic for recording or mastering projects.
  • Plugins — I am familiar with a wide range of audio plugins, such as Universal Audio’s extensive collection (I use an Apollo device for recording), oeksound’s Soothe2, FabFilter’s mastering collection, and more. Knowledge of these can be helpful when helping students build their collection and guiding them to record with such tools.
Video
  • OBS — I have designed scenes and broadcasted using OBS, which is one of the primary tools used by churches to live stream.
  • Final Cut Pro — I have used Final Cut Pro for over 200 broadcasts, including full online worship services, music videos, teaching videos, and more. While I design most elements myself, I also know how to incorporate third-party effects or plugins when needed.
  • Restream — I have used Restream to broadcast to multiple platforms at once; this is especially helpful for churches, since congregants tend to spread across different apps (e.g., demographics differ for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.).
  • Motion — I have used Apple’s Motion to design motion graphics, such as dynamic backgrounds, lower thirds, transitions, and more.
  • Note: My doctoral dissertation focused on the usage of video to develop Christian community, which is of special relevance since 2020 and will continue to be into the future.
Online
  • Web Design — I have designed websites since 1995, and much of that work has been for local churches and non-profits. Over the past twenty years, I have designed for Pioneer Clubs, Harvest Bible Chapel (for one of their church plants), Westminster Presbyterian Church, Uptown Baptist Church, and others. I also designed PaperBlazer.com and JoelJupp.com.
  • Photoshop / Graphic Design — I use Photoshop on a regular basis to design for churches and businesses. Currently, most of my graphic work involves designing for online worship for my local church.
Planning/Presentation
  • Planning: I use PlanningCenter, SongSelect, Dropbox, Soundcloud, Hymnary, etc., all of which help planning and prep. (Example: During the pandemic, I had choir members submit videos via Dropbox, so I could edit the audio in Ableton and create a combined choral video in Final Cut Pro.)
  • Presentation: I am comfortable with using Keynote, MediaShout, and ProPresenter.

Note: I have other tech experience as well, so if there is a specific technology I have not mentioned, feel free to let me know, and I can let you know if I have experience with that.

Worship Planning Example

I believe that worship leadership extends beyond music. For an example of worship planning, here is a sample of a new service proposal. In the aftermath of the January 2022 surge of health issues in our area, I felt the need to provide space for vulnerable church members. This is the proposal for that service.

To demonstrate teaching capacity, here are samples of courses I have taught in the past.

Comparable to a Leadership Class

Note: I have taught a wide range of courses, including a good amount of Bible classes, and my doctorate focused on ministry and leadership. I am comfortable teaching and leading discussions in theology, religion, philosophy, and writing.

Note: Since I currently lead worship full-time, I would like to inform my current pastor before changing positions. I have included a previous pastor who has known me for a decade; I led worship under his leadership, and I led college ministry under his oversight. You are more than welcome to contact my current pastor in the final stage of the interview process, if you’d like to do so.

Recommendation for Teaching Skills

Summary

My background in worship leading and technology uniquely qualifies me for this position. To highlight:

  • Over 20 years of worship leading in multiple church traditions — including Baptist (Southern, American, General Conference), Pentecostal, Presbyterian/Reformed, and United Methodist.
  • Experience in training musicians — including teaching Worship Band at Southwest Christian School, overseeing musicians at Tippecanoe Baptist Camp, and leading children/youth musicians at Lombard CRC. My doctoral degree in leadership, along with a dissertation that focused on technology, enables me to help worship leaders think and lead more effectively.
  • Experience in audio recording — ranging from performance (piano, guitar, vocals) to mixing/mastering to production. My experience includes working with MIDI and audio software, as well as using analog synths, effect pedals, audio plugins, etc.
  • Experience in video technology — including creating graphics (static and motion), designing online broadcasts, streaming with OBS, and producing original music videos.
  • Experience in online technology — including web design for churches, as well as the development of social media content for churches.
  • Experience in writing — including publishing, editing, songwriting, etc. My MA degree and my experience in creative writing enables me to teach things like song/lyric writing, hymn analysis, liturgical writing, etc.
  • Over 10 years of higher education teaching — including teaching for Moody Bible Institute, Aurora University, Judson University, Lancaster Bible College, and Trinity Christian College.
