A Caretaker’s Prayer

Caretaking Prayer — Watercolor Image (JoelJupp.com)

Lord,

Thank you for this day,

a day to live, love, and serve —

for in this, I am closest to you,

the one who

enlivens all,

embraces all,

and endows all.

When I tire,

provide me the strength I need

to help others without fear or angst,

and may my only regret be

that I cannot love others more.

When I empty

my energy or my pockets,

supply your never-ending sustenance,

like a brook down the mountainside,

bringing unspeakable peace once more,

as you have so many days before.

When I fail,

whether that be in thought, action,

bitterness, or forgetfulness,

forgive me — for I too need your care.

Soothe my own festering sickness

with a gentle voice and tender hands,

and may I feel your balm.

When I suffer,

hearing my faults from yesterday,

facing the sorrows of today,

or worrying about tomorrow,

comfort me, my shepherd,

and lead the way.

When I pause,

help me embrace the joy

and sometimes the silence,

as fleeting as those moments may be,

for they remind of your eternal presence.

In all this,

I give you gratitude.

It is an honor to serve,

both you and the children you love.

So make me a worthy servant

through Jesus Christ,

who served me to the end

and so taught me to serve.
